EDITORS’ PREFACE In the present work we have endeavored to set forth in continuous discourse and systematic exposition a considerable number of Professor Oliveira Salazar’s political statements, dating from 1928 to 1962, so as to allow them more conveniently to be read in their underlying unity of an explicit or implicit doctrinal position. Within the liberty that striving after idiomatic and thereby essentially faithful translation requires, the letter and the spirit of each quotation have been respected to the best of our ability. From which we have excepted the usually slight and, whenever feasible without too unsightly minutia, clearly indicated formal or semantic changes needed to obviate the verbal or stylistic discrepancies that inevitably appear in the first draft of any compilation.
Owing chiefly to the need of suitable transitions in a work of this nature, we have also effected here and there some more pronounced alterations of word or sense logically not incongruous both with the Author’s general line of thought and his definite views on given subjects.
Such a line of thought — said Dr. Salazar himself in 1938 — «does not mean that I have taken my stand upon certain maxims of government as upon a granite platform, the solidity and immutability of which are beyond discussion even in my own mind. On the contrary, in that sphere my ideas are under constant examination, for where political action is concerned, I want to be sure I continue in the right». Exemplar em bom estado.
